my mom sent this link to morgan and i last night. jack rushton is a stake patriarch in southern california. in 1989 he suffered an accident while body-surfing at laguna beach and became a quadriplegic. below is his comedy routine--it is hilarious. morgan and i were dying of laughter. and an awesome message at the end. watch it and you will love it too...

published.
one of the assignments for the public health nursing class i am taking this semester was to write a letter to an editor. who knew the salt lake tribune would actually want to publish my letter which can be see here.
i wrote a letter to say that i agree with schools and employers who are encouraging people to stay home when they are sick. my focus was H1N1 but obviously this applies to the regular seasonal flu and even a cold. staying home helps other people not get sick and rest is what a body needs to recover. obviously the H1N1 flu remains a hot topic as in less than 24 hours, 18 comments have been posted below my letter. some comments are vanilla, some are flat out mean, some are very harsh about the attention H1N1 has received in the press, some are strongly opinionated about the vaccine. some i agree with and some i don't. ahh, the nature of politics and media i guess. anyway, it was a neat and empowering experience to see that i could actually have my little voice heard in the state's biggest paper. just goes to show, you are more powerful than you may think...

get candy, get candy, get candy...
this past week we had a lot of halloween fun! on tuesday night we carved pumpkins at paul and cortney's house. morgan was the scooper of the pumpkin guts and i was the design cutter and carver of the pumpkin. cortney talked me into a tricky one and it turned out greatest! during our carving, paul's sister christine made some awesome pumpkin seeds. great way to kick off the week.

on friday we went to the ward halloween party and then headed out with the dickson clan to the cornbelly corn maze at thanksgiving point. our favorite part was definitely the special bouncy things--they are like rubber trampolines secured into the ground in the shape of a big rectangular bubble.
the pinnacle of the celebration of halloween was on saturday. cortney and i hosted a halloween party in our parking lot and it was tons of fun. most of the props go to the dicksons. we had yummy chili and cornbread, homeade root beer, apple cider, played doughnut on a string, bobbing for apples, and mafia. i was the treat-maker and spent all day saturday in the kitchen making pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, apple streusal, peanut butter marshmallow popcorn balls, cups-o-dirt, and oreo spiders. it was a lot of baking but i loved it and all of them turned out super yummy! and as for our costumes, we were an arab man and his belly dancer (outfits i brought back from my time in amman, jordan this past may).

other weekend fun.
our weekend was just full of fun!
in between morgan's tutoring time at the MTC on friday, we went to the provo temple. we love going to the temple together and being able to share our thoughts and impressions concerning the gospel inside of that holy place.

late on friday night we headed over to the lavell edwards stadium with paul and cortney to check out the college gameday set-up. it was AWESOME! one of my favorite shows here in provo. BYU students were camping out in tents in the parking lot to wait for the wristbands to get in the section immediately behind the stage. when my parents arrived around midnight, my dad headed out to join in the fun at the stadium. watching college gameday on saturday morning was ten times better knowing it was going own in my backyard and to see so many of my fellow BYU cougar fans. while the game was not a favorite, the weekend was with all of the great fun we had with friends and family.

the girls and their cookies.
morgan and i spent an evening with brooklyn and karalee. one word: BLAST! activities included: coloring books, cookie cutting, guitar playing, candyland, the incredibles, climbing on morgan, and decorating cookies. we quickly learned that activities needed to change every few minutes because little ones have short attention spans. we loved having the girls over and hope they come visit again soon!

flowchart.
last night while i was at "work", this flowchart was passed around as a bit of a joke...
(fyi--VRP=viral respiratory panel. a VRP is the diagnostic test being used to detect the H1N1 flu.)

(VRP positive? no-->send home. yes-->send home.)
message--if you have muscle aches, a high fever, and a sore throat, take some medicine and try to stay home.

we bleed blue.
one of my favorite stories is of my cousin's daughter, brooklyn, who on the season opener last year announced to her family at the ripe age of two and a half, "FOOTBALL SEASON STARTS TODAY!" i have the same enthusiasm as brooklyn for the beginning of football season. as soon as i woke up on saturday morning, espn's college gameday was on the television set. in the fall, i love working out between 8 and 10am on saturdays because i am totally entertained by this program and feel like i could work out forever due to the distraction. i had no idea that my day was going to be even a million times more exciting in about 12 hours. in the early evening a small gathering of friends gathered around the television set, feasted on hamburgers, salad, roasted corn, chips/dips, and we settled in to watch our #20 BYU cougars play in the brand new Texas Stadium (how about that jumbotron?!) against the #3 oklahoma sooners with the 2008 heismen trophy winner--sam bradford. and yes, it was one of the best games i ever remember witnessing in my life. that game is never coming off of our DVR. all things will be deleted to preserve the beauty of the defeat of the sooners by our BYU cougars. our defense rocked. and our offense came through in the end. it was awesome to see our corners really wrap people up and not give up lots of long plays--way to go bradley and logan. greatest to see mckay jacobson back in action. wonderful to see that our completely new offensive line did a decent job holding the line against what was called oklahoma's best ever defense. HORRAY--football season is in full swing and the cougars are ready to play.
